Thoughts On This Year's Super Bowl Ads

Sunday, February 6, 2011

Blah blah Packers, blah blah blah second half. I don't care. But like a lot of people, I watch for the ads. My thoughts after the jump!

Another season of football is done. I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty damn excited as I'm a baseball guy and that means we're that much closer to spring training and web gems on Baseball Tonight.

But like most 'mericans, I subjected myself once again to the super bowl this year. I really didn't care about either team, but I do always like seeing the commercials, and especially the shiny new TV spots for the big summer movies. Here are some of my favorites and some I thought were pretty bad:

Audi's "Release The Hound"

I think I knew somehow from the beginning it was going to be an Audi ad, as lately they've made luxury a big point of their advertising. But unlike a lot of pompous car commercials, it was actually quite fun and creative. A "luxury prison"? Calming the inmates by playing Kenny G (followed by a cameo from the man himself)? I love it!

Bud Light's "Hack Job"

Speaking of originality and creativity-this isn't it. We get it-Bug Light makes stuff better. They've been running the same idea in their ads for months now. Next!

"Fast Five" TV Spot

I don't have to say anything, we all knew this is unnecessary and no one cares about Vin Diesel anymore.

Dortios "House Sitting"

OK, this one's pretty funny, and it has a great punchline. It just feels a little too self-congratulatory. Still, one of the better ones I think.

"Cowboys and Aliens" TV spot

Most people's reaction to this one was "OMG why would any1 c this movie?" (Actually saw that comment). OK here's what you don't get.  First of all, it wasn't only written to cash in on any recent trends. It's based off a graphic novel from back in 2006. Second of all...look at the damn cast! Daniel Craig! Harrison Ford! Olivia Wilde (mmmmmmm...)! Plus a director, Jon Favreau, who has proven he can make some damn fun and still good action popcorn flicks (the "Iron Man" movies). Step back for a second and realize this is Harrison Ford as a cowboy fighting aliens in the Wild West. Now try and tell me that doesn't sound even a little bit badass. That's why I thought.

Volkswagon's "The Force"

I'm not usually one for Stars Wars references. Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars as much as the next guy but it gets to be annoying. I have to say, however, that this a great one. Why? Because it was about a kid who does what we always did as a kid. And in the end, his dad, who probably did the same thing when he was a kid, give him his moment. Plus, the kid actor didn't say a word but he was totally engaging merely because of his body language. Impressive!

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" TV Spot

Well, my hope is that maybe with this new TV spot I'll stop seeing the horrendous teaser trailer. If you don't actually want to watch this (and I don't blame you), here's the summary:
-EXPLOSIONS!
-Slight lens fare
-Shia LeBeouf looking confused/scared
-Hot bimbo-looking chick in slow mo.
So yes, more Michael Bay crap.

Snickers "Richard Lewis"

OK, this is probably tied for my favorite. First of all, I love Richard Lewis-he's hilarious and particularly great in "Curb Your Enthusiasm". So already I like it. Then it turns out to be another commercial in Snicker's campaign line of "you're not you when you're hungry" that started last with Betty White and Abe Vigoda's flag football ad. Well done Snickers, well done.

"Captain America" TV spot

OK, full disclosure: I don't know much about Captain America. The film's getting a lot of buzz but I wasn't sure it would gather my interest without knowledge of the series and character. Boy, was I wrong. The style of the film looks slick and cool, and the action looks old-school and exciting. I will definitely be checking this one out!

"Super 8" TV Spot

This spot was definitely the one I was most looking forward to, being a huge Abrams fan and having bought into the mystery of this film after the wild teaser was released. I wasn't disappointed-I actually got a sort of "E.T." vibe from it: a young protagonist is thrown into the middle of a sci-fi conspiracy, and it looks like he might be the most logical and level headed person amongst the panicking adults. Can't wait to see this one!

"Rango" TV Spot

I'm not one to see a lot of animated films (except Pixar of course), as I think there's a flood of them lately and they can be really hit or miss. But I have to say, this looks like a lot of fun. The whole look of the film is great, as is the setting, and of course Johnny Depp is awesome. I'll be seeing this.

That's about it. Football is over and baseball is closer, and we got some pretty good ads on the way.

Thanks for reading!
