Wii Fit Review

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

I have recently succumbed to purchasing the ever popular Wii Fit Plus with board and am writing a review of it while I test it out (and hopefully lose a few pounds).  Even though it's totally possible to go walk outside and jog around, the Wii Fit Plus seems like it could be more efficient and fun. More after the jump!

Upon opening the package, my very first thought was, "Holy crap this board is heavy!" After that initial shock and the slight embarrassment that I obviously need to work out, the game was as easy to set up as putting in the given batteries into the board then inserting the disk into the Wii.

The game's high pitched and energetic voice greets you and helps you set the whole game up. This set up includes your name, Mii, height, Body Mass Index, balance, and Wii Fit Age. The game is oddly polite and gives you extremely useful advice such as tips on how to fix your posture. Not only that but it is so perky and gives you a wonderful idea of how to set your goal weight or BMI and the time frame you want to accomplish your goal.

The game has 5 different section to help you stay fit and have fun whilst not easily getting bored: balance, strength training, yoga, aerobics, and training plus. Balance has games that help improve your balance. Even when you're working out, there is an on-screen area that tells you if you're balance is good while you're doing other activities so your balance is constantly being watched. Strength training helps you build muscles and focuses on working "with" your personal trainer who does the workout with you. Yoga gives you poses that focus on toning muscles and improving posture. Aerobics helps you tone your body but gives you more of a game-like feel with such minigames as Hula Hoop! Yeah, you've gotta hula that pixelated hoop. And lastly, training plus is the new addition to Wii Fit Plus and combines training with more fun games.

On the main page of Wii Fit Plus is a calendar that helps you track your progress. It tells you how long you worked out, how many calories you burned, and a graph of your progress. What makes this really neat is that you don't have to view the graphs in one form such as weight. You can view it from your BMI rating, your progress in each of the five categories, or calories burned in a day. Also on the main page, you can choose your own personalized workout plan and put your favorite activities or games in any order and choose how long you want to work out for. You can do this or you can choose one of the pre made workouts that focus on either specific parts of your body/balance/yoga. But don't worry, it also has pre made workouts for relaxing and warming up. Very convenient for those times you just don't feel like making your own schedule.

Other benefits of the Wii Fit Plus is that all work outs are quick, easy and really give you a good workout. With Wii Fit Plus you can customize parts of your body that you want to work on and the intensity of your workout. Wii Fit automatically puts a time frame to tell you how long your workouts will be and even suggests workouts that might help you achieve your goal. But don't worry, if you choose a workout that seems too stressful, the Wii Fit has a pop-up that tells you you're about to do a workout that might be too strenuous and asks if you really want to continue. Ah, it's so kind. Not to mention you get to choose a male or female personal trainer for the game!

My overall brief review:

Buy it. It's totally worth and it and actually really fun! The games not only work out your body, but have little tricks in them that help encourage the brain to keep running too.
