Don't even pretend you don't have a secret love for movies that would be classified as a "Child's Movie." When you're home sick, or just want to chill out, there is that specific film you turn on that makes you feel young, giddy, and childlike. I have compiled ten of those movies (rated PG or G) that should, if not already, be on your Favorite List. More after the jump!
I must say first, that these are films in a different realm from the classical Disney films because, well, you can't beat Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King. Seriously.
So, apart from those films with characters whose hair is annoyingly perfect and flippy and love stories that happen much too quickly between people who don't even know each other's last names- I mean, honestly, the prince comes walking up and sees some barefooted hippie singing to birds and instantly falls in love- alright, sorry. I'm finished now.
Top 10 Must See
Meet the Robinsons (G)
Exceptionally classic story with jokes that will make you laugh out loud and scenes that will warm your heart like a freshly baked batch of cookies! This story is so much fun because the characters have tons of fun, yet random lines and their silly banter makes you giggle constantly. The other exciting parts of this film are the graphic animations and the whimsical attitude that engulfs the entire movie's atmosphere. Each silly little invention in the film makes you laugh, like the peanut butter and jelly sandwich spreader. This movie is really a must-see.
Finding Nemo (G)
There is something to say for films that teach morals at the end, but there is something even more to say about those who teach moral after moral along the way and still keep you interested. What I think makes this movie so great are the lovable characters. While the plot is fun and entertaining, it's characters like Dory, the blue tang fish with short-term memory loss, the gang of sharks and the chilled-out sea turtles that make it so much fun!
Up (PG)
This movie has something for everyone: Kevin for the kids (but secretly you), Dug for the older kids (but secretly you), the heart warming love between Carl and Ellie (and you totally cried at her death), and the graphics that make your eyes bug out (and you totally loved it and were giggling along with everyone else at your funny 3-D glasses).
Wall-e (G)
Not only is Wall-e amazing for having the start-up sound of a Mac (I'm not biased), but the film is wonderfully made and graphically beautiful. Even with little to say the first hour of the movie, an entire story is told and captures your heart immediately.
Shrek (PG)
This is one of those movies where you laugh at the dirty jokes hidden in it for the adults, but also laugh because the children watching it with you are laughing too, thinking whatever you're laughing at is a joke they didn't get so are also laughing to not look stupid, only to make you laugh even harder. Wow, that was confusing. This movie has so many funny jokes, innuendos, good morals, and classic dialogue that you just can't go wrong.
Hook (PG)
Two Words: Robin. Williams. Three Syllables: RU-FI-O! You can't even begin to describe the awesomeness of this film. It's a must-see. No questions.
Muppet Christmas Carol (G)
It could be the warm-fuzzy feeling you get from watching Kermit the Frog sing a little ditty, but this movie is really great thanks to The Great Gonzo pretending he's Charles Dickens. Every song is something that you'll be laughing along with and you can't help but singing it too. But out of all the characters, it's Michael Caine that really makes you believe talking to singing puppets is totally normal and, might I be so bold to say, cool. There is no way this movie won't put you in a great mood.
Emperor's New Groove (G)
I'm not sure I can even explain this movie's awesomeness in one short review. So instead, I'll attach this youtube clip feature Kronk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv-sKP17xTw
Ferngully (G)
Who doesn't love to feel whimsical sometimes? This movie captures the whole bad-ass and pretty fairy concept and twists it with the evil tree-cutting humans. Really, my favorite part of this (other than the pretty sparkly lights and sassy main character, Christa) are the lines said by Batty. Sure, this movie has some great parts including Christa's father who is very reminiscent of the Sultan from Aladdin, the awesome dance scene featuring all the fairies, the witty dialogue between Christa and the humans, but really, it's all about Batty. Would it help if I told you Batty was played by Robin Williams?
The Rescuers Down Under (G)
This film is pretty much awesome. It has the old outback, crime-fighting mice, a scary hunter who gave me nightmares for years, and the most charming and hilarious lines in a 1990's animated movie. All the characters are exceptionally quirky, which really makes this movie lovable. And, if all that doesn't suit you, who doesn't want to listen to Eva Gabor's gorgeous accent (Miss Bianca)? Seriously. It's kinda hot.
