In case you needed more proof that Geeks truly rule the world, "Spaced: The Complete Series" is legitimate proof. Simon Pegg's 1994 comedy hit takes a wannabe comic book artist, Tim, and wannabe journalist, Daisy, and throws them into a chaotic life as a pair of penniless twentysomethings with nothing spectacular going for either of them.
Spaced is a single camera, no laugh track, amazingly geeky sitcom. The two main characters, Tim (Simon Pegg) and Daisy (Jessica Stevenson), find themselves suddenly homeless and end up renting a flat together in London. The show also includes their drunken landlady, a delightfully dark neighbor, and the two main character's best friends: a fashionista and a firearm addict.
The idea behind the show follows Tim, a wannabe comic book artist, and his new friend Daisy, who is a wannabe journalist. The two find a flat but must pretend to be engaged in order to rent and the hilarity lies with their poor attempts at pretending to know each other. However it's not just the awkward situations that they encounter while trying to portray their falsified relationship. The constant reference to pop culture, geek fandoms, and cult series are sometimes hidden and sometimes blatant but always hysterical. What makes this series so memorable are the constant referential jokes stuck throughout all the episodes, making the viewer feel as if he or she is in on the jokes.
Speaking of jokes, one main reason why the show is so successfully funny is because their jokes can be just visual gags or laugh-out-loud funny comments. Not only do they have a variety of jokes and one-liners, but they really focus on the ability of making their funnies fit for all sorts of people- not just geeks and the pop-culture savvy people.
The characters are down to earth and are never too perfect. This makes them highly likable with a perfect balance between the two. Their neighbors and friends are always around, which means there are always more laughs to go around! The show is character driven and that makes them more likable and easily identifiable. The similarities between the characters and real world people are so realistic that it's almost as if it were a reality TV show watching Tim and Daisy's personal "dramas."
When you think of this show, it's also very important to realize that Simon and Jessica are not only the stars but the writers of the series as well. I believe that this is the reason that they fit their characters better than any other actor could have. Simon had one more responsibility, though. He was the director as well, adding just one more reason why the show is so successfully hilarious.
